Description
Indulge in this rich and creamy chocolate custard dessert that is perfect for any occasion. Serve chilled with whipped cream and chocolate shavings for a delightful treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 200g dark chocolate, chopped
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 6 large egg yolks
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
- Whipped cream, for serving (optional)
- Chocolate shavings, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Melt the Chocolate: In a heatproof bowl, melt the dark chocolate over a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Heat Cream and Milk: In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream and milk. Heat over medium heat until the mixture is warm, but not boiling.
- Prepare Egg Mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, granulated sugar, and salt until pale and slightly thickened.
- Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the warm cream mixture to the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling. Once combined, return the mixture to the saucepan.
- Cook Custard: Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Do not allow it to boil.
- Add Chocolate: Remove from heat and stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla extract until fully incorporated and smooth.
- Chill the Dessert: Pour the custard into individual serving dishes or one large dish. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until set.
- Serve: Serve chilled with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate shavings if desired.
Notes
- When adding the warm cream to the egg mixture, do it slowly to prevent the eggs from scrambling.
- For an extra rich flavor, use high-quality dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content.
- For a smoother texture, strain the custard mixture before adding the chocolate.
- Can be prepared a day in advance, allowing the flavors to deepen.
