Description

A creamy and spiced homemade eggnog recipe perfect for the holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus more for garnish
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and granulated sugar until light and creamy.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine milk, heavy cream, nutmeg, and salt. Heat over medium heat until just steaming, but do not boil.
  3. Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the eggs and sugar, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly and reaches 160°F (about 71°C). Do not let it boil.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract, and transfer to a jug or pitcher. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
  6. Serve cold, garnished with a sprinkle of ground nutmeg.

Notes

  • This eggnog can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
  • For a richer flavor, consider using fresh nutmeg instead of ground.
