Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring (red and green)
- Holiday-themed sprinkles
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (optional)
- 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar (optional, for icing)
- 2 tablespoons milk (optional, for icing)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Combine Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
- Divide Dough: Divide the dough into three equal parts. Leave one part plain, color one part red, and color the last part green by adding a few drops of food coloring and mixing until evenly distributed.
- Layer the Dough: Press the plain dough into the prepared baking pan, smoothing it into an even layer. Follow with the green dough and then the red dough, smoothing each layer out evenly.
- Add Toppings: Sprinkle the top with holiday-themed sprinkles and optionally, white chocolate chips.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 18-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Cool and Cut: Allow the cookie bars to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cool, lift them out of the pan and cut into squares or bars.
- Optional Icing: If desired, whisk together confectioners’ sugar and milk to make a simple icing. Drizzle over the cooled bars.
Notes
- Chill the Dough: If the dough becomes too soft to handle, chill it in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes before layering.
- Customize Colors and Toppings: Feel free to experiment with different colors and sprinkles to match other holiday themes.
- Storage: Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
